Grease is a solid or semisolid lubricant formed as a dispersion of thickening agents in a liquid lubricant. Grease generally consists of a soap emulsified with mineral or vegetable oil.

A common feature of greases is that they possess a high initial viscosity, which upon the application of shear, drops to give the effect of an oil-lubricated bearing of approximately the same viscosity as the base oil used in the grease. This change in viscosity is called shear thinning. Grease is sometimes used to describe lubricating materials that are simply soft solids or high viscosity liquids, but these materials do not exhibit the shear-thinning properties characteristic of the classical grease. For example, petroleum jellies such as vaseline are not generally classified as greases.

Greases are applied to mechanisms that can be lubricated only infrequently and where a lubricating oil would not stay in position. They also act as sealants to prevent ingress of water and incompressible materials. Grease-lubricated bearings have greater frictional characteristics because of their high viscosity.[From Wiki]

Due to the viscous nature of grease, gravity and overflow filling are not suitable for filling grease. For this highly viscous material, VKPAK recommends the use of a rotary lobe pump filling machine, which is particularly suitable for materials with high viscosity. The filling accuracy is high and the speed is fast. In addition, for tube packing grease, VKPAK recommends using tube filling and sealing machine, of course, for such viscous materials as grease, you need to use a pump to fill. A rotary lobe pump filling machine is the best option to pack grease (without heating and with the possibility to connect to a CIP system), but at a higher cost. So we have also prepared the alternative of using a piston pump filling machine, while at the same time needing to heat the grease to increase the flow for smoother filling.

Lube oils and grease obviously come in different viscosities, such as motor oils. However, other oils, from essential oils to lubricants and greases, will extend the range of viscosity even farther than what might be seen in a range of motor oils. Though viscosities vary, most packagers in this industry will use a pump or piston filler to help move the product through the machine to the bottles in an efficient manner. Rinsing machines may be used if bottles accumulate debris during manufacture, delivery or storage, but are not always a necessity in the industry. Bottle cappers will usually include a spindle or chuck capper for the popular continuous thread cap, though other capping machines may be seen on occasion. Many panel type labelers will be used for oils and lubricants, but front, front and back or even wrap may be seen as well. Complete filling solutions for oils and lubricants are available as tabletop systems for small producers, semi-automatic lines or completely automated lines.

Some lubricants and grease are slower flowing than others, take high viscosity motor oil for example. High viscosity liquids will normally require a specific type of filling machine to complete this portion of the packaging process. So while the machinery used to package different lubricants and grease can vary for each project, a typical automated packaging system for thick lubricants and grease may consist of:
